Dex Cool oli alguses välja reklaamitud kui pika vahetusvälbaga vedelik.
Tegelikkus on veidi teine, vahetama peaks ikka - kui tavalist mina näiteks vahetan üle aasta, siis dex-cooli üle kahe.

Väike informatiivne jutt ka, mida ei viitsi tõlkida ja on räägitud Buigu mootorite kohta aga pädeb muude kohta ka. Eriti pane tähele külma kliima kohta käivaid lõike:

Dex-Cool
GM started using Dex-Cool in 1996 on some of its cars, and used it in most of its cars since then, including cars with the Series II 3800. Dex-Cool uses a combination of organic acids as its corrosion inhibitors (OAT – Organic Acid Technology). GM believes that it provides better corrosion protection than regular green coolant for cooling system composed of different metals (primarily iron, aluminum, and brass), and provides a longer 5-year service life. (Series II engines use aluminum radiators, heating cores, and lower intake manifolds.) However, the 5-year service life has not been realized in practice for two principal reasons. First, one group of corrosion inhibitors (2-ethylhexanoate and ethylhexanoic acid) soften many plastics such as nylon-66 and silicone rubber. Nylon-66 was used as the carrier in lower intake manifold (LIM) gaskets up to and including the 1999 model year cars. (The actual seals for the coolant and air intake passages are formed on top of the carrier). As a result, the plastic carrier essentially dissolved around the coolant passages between the LIM and the heads, allowing the gasket seals around these passages to loose structural support and leak coolant. This caused many engines to be repaired well before the 5 year service life. The degradation of the plastic carrier seems to be accelerated by exposure to freezing temperatures and poorly milled surfaces in some of the LIMs, which allows coolant to leak past the seals and wet broad areas of the carrier.

Second, some of the inhibitors in Dex-Cool can form sludge and corrosion in the cooling system when the engine is run for long periods of time at low levels of coolant with air in the radiator. Under these conditions, coolant drains from the cooling passages of the cylinder heads when the engine is turned off, and rust forms in these cooling passages. In addition, various chemical reactions occur between the hot coolant, air, and rust to create the sludge. The low coolant level is caused by a radiator cap that fails with its coolant-return valve in the open position in combination with the lack of coolant in the coolant reservoir. This caused many radiators to be flushed or replaced well before the 5 year service life.

Regular Green Coolants
The regular green coolants do not cause problems with the LIM gaskets, but can cause sludge build up and other problems. Green coolants typically use various silicate and phosphate chemicals as corrosion inhibitors. These provide limited time protection in multi-metal coolant systems (two years), and can cause premature failure of the water pump shaft seal since the silicates abrade the pump shaft. Also, after two years of service, the silicates begin to coagulate and form deposits in the radiator and the engine. Finally, many brands of green coolant have phosphates, which can form sludge deposits when hard water is mixed with the coolant. This is why it is best to mix distilled water with the coolant.

SO, WHAT TO DO?

First of all, do not mix the two coolants in the same system.

If your engine originally came with regular green coolant (e.g., Series I engines), or was switched over, then stay with regular green coolant.

If your engine came with Dex-Cool and it still has the older nylon-66 carrier gaskets (model years 1996-1999), you should consider switching to regular green coolant (if you have not already switched). Just change the coolant every two years religiously, always dilute with distilled water, and constantly check the water pump shaft seal for leaks. For most cars, replacing a water pump is less expensive than replacing the manifold gaskets. IMPORTANT: Flush the cooling system with water at least two times (running engine to temp and revving engine several minutes) before switching. See the previous post on flushing the system. The cooling system holds around 13 quarts of coolant. Since there may be residual water in the system, add 7 quarts of green coolant first before adding the distilled water. (you can fill the coolant reservoir with a mix of green coolant and distilled water).

Also consider changing to green coolant if your engine came with Dex-Cool, AND you have the more resistant plastic carrier gaskets (model years 2000-2005, and common for repairs in this time) AND you live in an area that gets below 28F in the winter. (As described in the supplemental information below, exposure to excess freezing conditions does seem the accelerate failure of both the Nylon and plastic carriers.)

If your intake manifold gaskets have been replaced with the metal-carrier gaskets (common for repairs after 2005) you will be OK staying with Dex-Cool. Just regularly inspect the coolant for signs of sludge and corrosion, keep the coolant reservoir filled, change the Dex-Cool every 3 years or first sign of sludge or corrosion, and change the radiator cap every time the coolant is changed. This also applies if your gaskets are the more resistant plastic-carrier gaskets AND if you live in an area that always stays above 28F in the winter. But the more resistant plastic-carrier gaskets only last 12-15 years under these conditions.
