Cadillac'i plaanid Euroopas
quote: Cadillac plans European car to fight German rivals
Reuters / August 21, 2003
DETROIT (Reuters) -- Cadillac, General Motors' luxury brand, is considering building a mid-sized car in Europe to compete in the heart of the market against its German competitors, a Cadillac official said.
The model would be smaller than the Cadillac CTS sedan, and about the same size as the BMW 3 series and the Mercedes C class, said John Howell, Cadillac's director of global brand development.
"We need to be competitive with the lower end of our main competitors, but we don't want to go down into the compact and subcompact classes," Howell told Reuters. "We might be willing to do a vehicle, an entry-luxury vehicle."
Reuters spoke to Howell on Wednesday and last week.
The vehicle, part of Cadillac's renewed expansion into Europe, the world's largest market for luxury brand vehicles, could arrive in two to three years, Howell said.
One factor for building in Europe is a 10 percent duty on vehicles imported from the United States, Howell said. Cadillac also could take advantage of Europe's trade agreements to export to other countries, including back to the United States, he said.
Cadillac sells the American-made CTS and larger Seville sedans in Europe. But Europeans complained that the Seville, launched in 1998, was too large for the roads, and tuned for a soft ride on America's rough highways. GM stopped selling a right-hand-drive version of the Seville in Britain several years ago.
"The Seville was an American car designed for the American market," said Bruce Harrison, a consultant with the Automotive Group of automotive advisors Global Insight.
Through June, Cadillac sold just 107 Sevilles in Europe, Cadillac spokesman Kerry Christopher said.
The CTS, which went on sale last year, was partially engineered in Germany and has received positive reviews in Europe. But its sales through June totaled just 284 in Europe.
MORE DEALERSHIPS, CARS
Cadillac's limited lineup and low profile in Europe has also been a hurdle to sales. Cadillacs are grouped with mainstream Opel vehicles at select Opel dealerships across Europe. The Cadillacs are often forgotten at the back.
In late June, Cadillac appointed the Dutch car dealership group Kroymans Corp. B.V. to spearhead an effort to build 25 Cadillac Experience Centers in major cities across Europe. Cadillac expects the new, large dealerships will raise its recognition across the continent.
Cadillac will also expand the lineup with the SRX mid-sized SUV and the XLR roadster next year, followed by the next-generation Seville, to be called the STS, in late 2004 or early 2005. The Corvette sports car will also be included at the new Cadillac dealerships.
The strengthening euro had made importing some of those vehicles from the United States more attractive, Howell said. "We've definitely swung from a marginal business case situation to a very profitable business case."
Europeans have also complained that Cadillac's big V-8 engines guzzle too much gas. But the CTS and the SRX both have six-cylinder engines, and a four-cylinder could be in a future vehicle, Howell said. Cadillac will also add diesel engines, which are in more than 40 percent of new cars in Europe, in three to five years, he said.
With the additional vehicles, Cadillac sales are expected to grow to more than a few thousand a year, Howell said without giving specifics. "It's not the kind of thing where we're going to do a couple thousand, which has been our history," he said.

Ja USAs:
Cadillac wants fewer, stronger dealerships
LaNeve intends to lower U.S. store count to 425
By Charles Child
Automotive News / August 25, 2003
DETROIT - Mark LaNeve, marketing general manager of Cadillac, wants 75 fewer Cadillac dealerships in the top 50 U.S. markets.
The brand has about 500 stores in the top 50 markets, he said.
By slimming that total to 425, the remaining dealerships will be stronger financially and better able to deliver high-quality service to customers.
Having fewer but stronger dealerships is one part of LaNeve's long-term plan to compete with the top global luxury brands, BMW, Lexus and Mercedes.
"Is Cadillac back?" LaNeve said. "No, not yet. But we have turned the corner."
Needed: CTS variations
Speaking to the Automotive News staff here on Monday, Aug 18, LaNeve also said:
Cadillac's most pressing product need is more CTS variations. "We need coupes, convertibles, crossovers. Now we have the sedan and one powertrain." In contrast, BMW substantially boosts 3-series sales by offering a convertible, coupe and various engines, he said.
General Motors' top officers, including Robert Lutz, vice chairman for product development, and Gary Cowger, president of GM North America, want to create an "ultraluxury car" for Cadillac with a sticker above $100,000. But no program has been approved.
Cadillac will never be No. 1 again in luxury brand sales because it won't offer cars smaller than the CTS to compete with cars such as the 3 series, he said.
Cadillac's mission is to go further upscale with cars such as the XLR roadster. Its base sticker is $76,200.
As the brand moves up, Cadillac probably will not sell 300,000 vehicles per year again, LaNeve said. Sales in 2002 were 199,748. Its last year above 300,000 was 1986, when it sold 304,057 cars.
Cadillac's TV campaign, featuring the tagline "Breakthrough" and the music of rock group Led Zeppelin, will be phased out eventually. It sends the message that Cadillac is changing, he said, but advertising needs to communicate product features and the brand's exclusive image.
Spending on TV advertising will continue to decline as Cadillac shifts money to magazines and direct mail. "I'm not convinced premium brands need a lot of TV," he said. "Our customers are not watching a lot of TV."
Buyouts are tougher
LaNeve gave no timetable for when the number of Cadillac stores in major metro markets will fall to his goal of 425.
Cadillac is not purchasing and retiring stores; nearly all reductions come when one Cadillac dealer buys out another.
The brand has about 1,400 dealerships nationwide, many in small stores with small volumes.
Cadillac's recent success has caused dealership values to rise and has slowed buyouts, he said.
The angular styling on the CTS has been well received. Well-known athletes and rap musicians have embraced the Escalade, lending cachet to Cadillac.
Last week, GM plants were preparing to ship to dealerships two new nameplates with angular styling, the XLR and SRX sport wagon.
Through seven months of this year, Cadillac sales rose 5.8 percent over the year-ago period, compared with a 3.5 percent rise for Lexus and BMW and a 5.7 percent gain for Mercedes.

Cadillac teatas esmaspäeval ametlikult, et hakkab tootma oma BLS-mudeli universaalkerega versiooni.
Ametlikel andmetel tuleb mudel müüki vaid Euroopas, esimesed autod peaksid soovijateni jõudma juba 2007. aasta neljandal kvartalil.

Tagaosa iseenesest kole pole, vaid punnis esituled on kahtlased
tegelikult on Cadillacil üks väga nägus universaal olemas, neliveoline
...oleks vaid hind sõbralikum

Pidasin silmas selliseid universaale, millel on tagaots hästi lauge või muul viisil pagasiruum ära nuditud. Väljast tundub nagu universaal, aga pakiruumi kasuliku mahu poolest pole sedaanist eriti palju targem. Euroopas vist lausa mingi eraldi nish - nn elustiiliuniversaalid, kus kogu ülesanne on mahutada kaks spordikotti.
